American Heart Association Intern: Web Accessibility in Dallas, Texas

Responsibilities

The American Heart Association (AHA)seeks an energetic, motivated, and resourceful individual to join the Business Technology (BT) team in Dallas, TX. The desired candidate is someone who is not only sensitive to the electronic communications access needs people with disabilities have, but also will be an individual who will collaborate with the team in ways not yet imagined. As the Digital Accessibility Intern, you will be responsible for:

Responsibilities

  • Supporting BT in identifying potential barriers to accessibility and suggesting potential solutions which will be in conformance with accessibility guidelines and laws including but not limited to W3C WCAG 2.x standards, compliance with the ADA and the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act.

  • Assisting BT in applying accessibility knowledge to the company’s digital properties including, but not limited to web applications, mobile applications, and electronic documents.

  • Supporting BT in managing and maintaining the American Heart Association’s Standards documentation repository.

  • Assisting in the establishment and implementation of effective accessibility training materials.

  • Reviewing, writing and presenting procedure documents according to standard templates.

  • Facilitating and tracking procedure reviews and updates.

  • Defining and meeting key deliverables for assignments and providing updates to management.

  • Completing assignments in a high-quality and timely fashion.

  • Participating and assisting with meeting facilitation and minutes related to BT assignments.

  • Identifying ways to assist BT in promoting accessibility through various communication methods.

  • Supporting the roadmap planning and project intake efforts.

· Skills & Knowledge

  • Problem-solving abilities

  • Ability to be detail oriented

  • Awareness or understanding of closed captioning

  • Basic proficiency in video editing

  • An interest in issues of accessibility, disability, assistive technology or universal design

  • Applicants should be ready to learn on the job and will be supported in developing a robust skill set in the area of accessibility

  • Strong problem solving and time management skills

  • Ability to work under pressure and the ability to work independently and in small groups is required

  • Knowledge of, or experience with, the following is a plus:

  • Accessibility barriers resulting from visual impairment, hearing impairment, cognitive Impairment, mobility impairment, and / or a combination of multiple disabilities

  • Accessibility standards: WCAG 2.0, ADA Section 508, 21st Century Video and Communications Act

  • Windows and Mac OS, mobile accessibility on Android and iOS

  • Screen readers, screen magnifiers, switch controls

  • HTML 4 and 5, CSS 2 and 3

  • SharePoint

  • Experience with Scrum and agile methodologies

  • Experience with Internet or mobile usability/accessibility research is a plus

  • A solid working knowledge and comfort level with Microsoft Office including, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, and SharePoint and Adobe Acrobat Pro DC is required.

Qualifications

Experience

  • Demonstrated writing and editing skills

  • Excellent oral and visual communication skills

  • Experience working with a team, faculty or staff

  • Demonstrated dependability and time/task management skills

Education

  • 1+ years of experience in web design, video production, copy editing, journalism, publishing, or other related fields is preferred.
