Responsibilities

The American Heart Association (AHA) has an excellent opportunity for a Vice President & Controller at our office located in Dallas, TX.

Under the guidance of the Chief Financial Officer, the Vice President & Controller is responsible for: the financial operations of the Association functioning under a shared services environment supporting the national center and five regions. Financial operations includes, monthly and annual close processes; implementation of technical accounting standards; Association-wide financial reporting; financial consultation to national center departments and regions; accounts payable; tax reporting and compliance; system administration for Essbase reporting tool; government grants administration; external audit oversight; providing excellent customer service; and the professional development of Finance staff.

Here are some of the essential job duties:

  • Formulates, directs and monitors accounting policies and procedures of the Association, including mentorship and consultation, and monitors compliance with external accounting rules and regulations.

  • Directs, budgets and controls the administrative affairs of the Office of Finance operating under a shared services environment supporting the national center and five regions.

  • Directs and monitors policies and procedures to ensure accurate administration and compliance for federal funds.

  • Directs and monitors the development and distribution of monthly and annual financial reports.

  • Plans and prepares presentations on the financial operations and status of the Association to senior staff and volunteers.

  • Supports the Chief Financial Officer in planning and providing support for specified volunteer committees and other ad hoc task forces, as established.

  • Assists the Chief Financial Officer in planning and preparing monthly teleconferences providing support and guidance to regional SVPs of Operations.

  • Directs and monitors tax reporting and compliance for the Association, including completion of the annual Form 990 and 990T.

  • Oversees the annual financial audit and federal government grant Single Audit

  • Provides oversight for the Office of Finance budget totaling approximately $7 million including 70 finance and accounting staff.

  • Responsible for the management, training and development of Office of Finance staff.

  • Participates in corporate partner/vendor contract negotiations and development, as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Finance/Accounting, MBA in Finance or Accounting preferred

  • Minimum eight (8) years’ experience in the related field

  • Experience in managing financial reporting for large corporation or non-profits

  • Experience in leading financial audit processes with external accountants and advisors

  • Experience in mentoring and supervising a team of ten or more in the field of accounting or finance

  • Certified Public Accountant credentials

  • Advanced knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

  • Knowledge of performance appraisal and mutual objective setting processes and concepts

  • Ability to meet and deal with all levels of staff and volunteers

  • Ability to recruit, select, train and supervise staff
